ARTIST BIO

During Covid, Spencer became obsessed with the simple objects of the day to day. Trapped inside his apartment, he bought a saw and began building small items to kill time—house slippers, incense holders, etc.

Soon this turned into larger tools like table saws, and hammer drills and larger pieces like tables and chairs.

Coming from a family of Big-rig truck drivers and church carpenters, Spencer substitutes traditional “fine” craft for a sort of “frankenstein.” Borrowing techniques like Shou Sugi Ban from the Japanese builders and butt joining from American framers, Spencer is interested in taking the forgotten and overlooked and treating it with a reverence—taking blue collar materials and transforming them into something not quite familiar.
